Jan Brown

Jan has always loved to draw but after A levels pursued a career teaching primary school children. She loved helping the children to develop in all creative subjects but in particular art. Teaching and bringing up three children left her little spare time and it was on retiring early that she was able to pick up pencils, paintbrushes and paint again. As a passionate gardener, she became particularly interested in botanical painting, attending courses in watercolour and other media. A few years later, after visiting an exhibition of wood engravings, she decided that she would like to learn how to engrave, particularly as she likes to draw and paint in detail and attended courses to learn the process.

Attending exhibitions at SPP, she was full of admiration for the high standard of printmaking and she decided that she would like to experiment with etching. After attending courses at Bothy Yard she became fascinated with the process. In April 2019 she was invited by Gareth to become a member and feels most privileged to be so. It is wonderful to work in such a friendly and creative environment, surrounded by such talented artists who are always happy to offer help and support. Sudbourne is such a  special place in an inspiring setting.

Jan’s prints have been shown with SPP exhibitions at the workshop and in other galleries in Suffolk. Wood engravings have been exhibited at Norwich Print Fair and the touring exhibitions of the Society of Wood Engravers and the American Society of Wood Engravers.
